What Are Crowns?

A crown is an artificial structure that covers a decayed or damaged natural tooth. Crowns provide attractive and fully functional replacements for compromised teeth.

Dentists place crowns when the natural tooth structure cannot function independently. Crowns are frequently employed when a tooth receives a root canal or when the upper part of the tooth is excessively decayed and cannot receive a filling.

To place a crown, the dentist must first prepare the tooth surface. The dentist must remove decay and reshape the tooth for a functional and aesthetically pleasing replacement.

The dentist creates a temporary crown that covers the exposed tooth while the measurements travel to the dental lab. When the crown returns from the lab, the dentist permanently cements it to the original tooth.

Benefits of Crowns

  • Provides an attractive replacement for a damaged tooth
  • Relieves dental pain
  • Patients can chew, talk, and eat normally
  • Long-lasting
  • Easy care
  • Saves natural teeth from extraction

Are You a Good Candidate for Dental Crowns?

You may be a good candidate for a crown if you have a broken, damaged, or heavily decayed tooth. Your dentist will thoroughly examine the tooth in question and judge whether a crown or another restoration is appropriate. In some cases, the tooth may need extraction. If a crown is impractical, a bridge, denture, or implant will replace the tooth.

Frequently Asked Questions About Dental Crowns

How long do crowns last?
Crowns may last anywhere from 10 to 15 years with proper maintenance. Patients should be careful to brush and floss as recommended to keep their crowns in top condition and prevent gum disease.
Does a crown hurt?
Using local anesthesia, we will thoroughly numb your existing tooth, so there is no discomfort when we reshape it to accommodate the crown.
Do temporary crowns need special care?
Temporary crowns are less durable and not attached as permanently as the final version. Try to chew mainly on the other side of your mouth, and be careful with brushing and flossing. If the temporary crown falls out, call our office to have it reseated.
How long does it take to recover from getting a crown?

There is no downtime needed after receiving a crown. You can resume normal activities immediately.

Your tooth may be slightly tender and sensitive for a few days after receiving the crown, but this will soon pass. Avoid sticky foods for at least 24 hours after getting a new crown.
